Report: Mr Ray Cullivan.
St Patrick's College Cavan senior team created a major shock when they defeated St Patrick's College, Navan in this years North Leinster league final at Kingspan Breffni Park last Friday, Nov 3rd. Rannafast Finalists 2005-06

Omagh CBS 2-8, St Patrick's College 0-6.
St Pat's Cavan Rannafast
team failed in their effort to regain the cup which the college had last won in 2002. However the Cavan boys can be very proud of their achievement in reaching the final and beating top class opposition on the way.
The St Pat's players played extremely well, giving their all, however the Omagh boys got vital scores at the right time, particularly, the goal after half time. This score put Cavan six points in arrears at this stage and
a well organized Tyrone side
defended in numbers from then on, making scores hard to get.
However the Cavan side battled bravely to the end. A number of these players will now join the Senior Squad for the North Leinster League, where hopes are high on reaching the semi-final stage. The senior side will compete in the Leinster Championship, where they will play Portlaoise CBS in early December.

RETURN

September 2005 marks yet another new era in the history of St Patrick's College.

The 29th of August marked the retirement of Mr Patsy Lee as Principal of our college and appointment of Dr Liam Mc Niffe as our new Principal.
August also saw the retirement of long standing members of staff, Mr Raymond Dunne, Guidance Councillor, Mrs Frances Galligan, Physical Education Instructor and Mrs Alice Beirne, College Nurse.

Mr Patsy Lee.
Mr Lee joined the college staff in 1967 and over the past thirty-eight years, his dedication to the college, staff and students has been appreciated by all who have had the pleasure of working alongside him and the hundreds of students who have attended his classes. Since that time, he has taught English, Latin, PE, and Art. Apart from his excellent record as a teacher, he trained students in athletics and helped football coaches prepare teams for matches. He was also involved in the production and set design of many musicals and was instrumental in the re-introduction of the student snooker room. Radio broadcasting has been part of Patsy's life for many years, a passion which he passed on to students here in the college, giving them valuable experience in the production of radio programmes and documentaries. He took up the position of Deputy Principal in September 2000 and as Principal in 2004.
We wish Patsy every happiness in his retirement.

Mr Raymond Dunne
Ray Dunne is also a past student of the College, leaving with a Mc Rory medal in 1963 and returning to teach Irish, Latin, History and Geography in 1969.Over the past thirty six years Ray has been involved in many school activities ranging from lighting design and technician for musicals, organising our College European Day in 1994 and more recently fundraising for the installation of flood lighting, drainage and an all weather track for senior pitch. 1974 saw the appointment of Ray as Careers/Guidance Councillor to St Pat's. Over the intervening years his door has always been open to all students looking for advice about subject choices and career direction. He is currently preparing the 25th edition of "Applying to College", formerly known as College Guide, which is published nationally and has proved to be an invaluable resource to students countrywide for many years.
We wish Raymond every happiness in his retirement.

Frances Galligan joined our staff in 1972. Since then she has taught Physical Education and Religion. Her commitment to College life has been appreciated on many levels, from her roles in sport, musicals and fundraising for College facilities. Indeed, she first entered St Pat's three years earlier, in 1969 to choreograph for the first musical which was staged in the then new assembly hall. Since that time the overwhelming success of the college musicals has not only been appreciated by the many audiences they enthralled, but also by the hundreds of students - musicians, set builders, dancers, painters, back-stage crews, chorus and main characters, who gained a great sense of achievement from their involvement.

Mrs Frances Galligan visiting Paris with a group of third year students

In all, Frances has been involved in 50 musicals, between Town Hall productions, Pantomimes and St Pat's. She also played a major role in our College European Day and with our fundraising for the all weather soccer pitch, all weather athletics track and drainage on senior pitch. She also travelled to many destinations in Europe with our school tours every Easter. Frances also accompanied students to Luxemburg to choreograph a drama staged for Schools European Day, called "Cassandra's Story".
We wish Frances every happiness in her retirement.

Alice Beirne came to St Patrick's College in 1997 to take up the position of College Nurse. Up until 2002 when boarding ceased she provided excellent care to over two hundred boarders and five hundred day-boys. Since 2002 she has run the infirmary on a part-time basis. Alice was always welcoming and interested in the students welfare and her friendly caring nature was often the best tonic needed to cure some ailments.
We wish Alice the very best in her retirement.

Dr Liam Mc Niffe
Dr Liam Mc Niffe took up his position as Principal of St Patrick's College on August 29th. He is a native of Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, and like Patsy, is also a past pupil of the college. He sat his Leaving Certificate in 1974, the year of our Centenary celebrations. He has been teaching English and History at Eureka Secondary School, Kells, Co Meath since 1979.
We extend a warm welcome to Dr Mc Niffe and wish him every success with his new position as our School Principal.

Largy College 2, St Patrick's College,1

Largy College, Clones became Cavan-Monaghan League Champions for the second year running when they defeated St Patrick's College on Tuesday last May 24th.
St Patrick's College were slow to settle into the game, with Largy dominating play in the first half. Largy were 2-0 up by half time, both goals resulting from free-kicks.
St Pat's rallied well in the second half and dominated the play. St Pat's pulled one back when Shane Kelly sent abeautiful diagonal cross-field ball to Enda Gaffney who controlled it perfectly and blasted the ball past the Largy keeper. However, the equaliser never came and Largy held on to take the cup.
St Pat's Team: Terry Smith, James Browne, Garry Sheridan, Patrick Brady, Derrick Hatchett, Enda Gaffney, Michael Higgins (Capt), Shane Craig, Shane Kelly, Paul Urbanski and Ronan Costello.

Mounted in a jewellers window
You seduced my helpless eye,
Capturing my gaze with your clean-cut smile,
Your twinkling wink, dazzling me with your fire,
Your internal inferno.
Paralysed by your beauty,
Wildly entranced by your figure,
I gazed upon your finely cut body
as I blasted out an array of rainbows
Onto the glass separating you and I.
How I would love to hold you as my own.
To me, precious Diamond,
You are much more than just sparkle and stone.

Despite the final score of 3-0, both sides seemed to be evenly matched with quite a few opportunities to score narrowly missed on both sides.

Fourth and Fifth year students from the Art Department of St Patrick's College, with their Art teacher Mr Leon Lynch and Mr John O' Shea (Deputy Principal) visited The Irish Museum of Modern Art and The National Gallery of Ireland on Wednesday, where they were given a guided tour of the exhibits.
The students found the exhibition at IMMA, by American artist Laurie Anderson very engaging.
Performance artist, musician, poet, writer and visual artist, all rolled into one would best characterise her exhibition, titled "The Record of the Time". It comprised over 80 works, including installation, audio, video and art objects. The work on view in this exhibition was for the main part sculptures married to sound, with violin, and words, playing a major part.

In the afternoon our visit to the National Gallery included works by Yeats, Monet, Picasso and Caravaggio.
Seeing "The Arrest of Christ" by Caravaggio was a real highlight for the students.

Ulster Colleges - Corn na nOg.

St. Patrick's College, Cavan's hopes of reaching this season's Corn na nOg final ended in disappointment on Friday 25th February when they were narrowly defeated by St. Pat's, Dungannon in a high-scoring semi-final played at the Tempo, Co. Fermanagh venue. The final score was 1-13 to 2-8 in favour of the Tyrone college.

It all looked promising for the Cavan college in the opening half and with the wind at their backs they led at the interval by 2-6 to 1-3. Indeed, towards the end of the first quarter the Cavan college looked to be in a commanding position leading by nine points to nil - 2-3 to 0-0 - and completely dominating the game.
Then the Dungannon side got a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty which rebounded off the crossbar but was finished to the net. This gave them the break they needed and they went in at the interval trailing by 2-6 to 1-3.
The Dungannon side tightened up considerably in the second-half and hitting their opponents on the break they slowly but surely reduced the leeway. Indeed, in the closing minutes the sides were level three times, before the Dungannon side pulled away with two late points for a narrow win in injury-time.

Scorers for St. Pat's, Cavan were - Niall Smith 1-1, Kevin Tierney 1-1, Tomas O'Keeffe 0-3, Niall McDermott,
Colm McKenna and Packie Leddy 0-1 each.

€2,500 raised for Tsunami Appeal.

Students of the college held a No Uniform day recently in aid of the Tsunami Disaster Appeal. The event was organised by Miss Gwen Brady
with the support of teachers, Prefects and Class Seniors
.

€2,500 was donated by the students to UNICEF

.

The students suggested that an extra euro would be donated if some of the teachers came into school in the uniform. This generous suggestion was taken up by nine of the staff and provided a good opportunity for students to "check our school uniforms".
