Creative engagement, The Arts in our Schools.

The National Association of Principals
and Deputy-Principals.
Creative Engagement music at st Pat's Cavan.
Up until now the experiences the students have been exposed to have involved the visual arts. Friday nights experience saw a departure from that. The concluding part of the project was about sound. The idea grew out of the Wood Carving Workshops which were held earlier in the year with artist Joey Burns. It was initially proposed to make a short film by the students about Joey as a wood carver, but over the course of the project we discovered that Joey had built a carving bench which produces sound as he carves. It was decided then to explore music through this unusual medium. The music workshops started on Wednesday with Joey on bench and Robert Perry arranging/composing, assisted by David Aymerich. The core of the rhythm was set on the bench where Joey was carving and as the students discovered ‘you don’t have to be able to play an instrument, you just have to be able to express the rhythm.

A special thanks to our Music Teacher Ms Mairead Maguire whose involvment in this part of the project was invaluable.
The music workshops were conducted by Joey Burns, Robert Perry and David Aymerich.

Last Thursday the Department of Education and Science  included St. Patrick’s College in a list of schools to progress to the tender and construction stage. This means that the College will very shortly be submitting its Department approved detailed plans for a totally new school with Cavan County Council. It is then hoped to move swiftly to the tendering stage and as soon as possible thereafter to begin construction. Barring delays it is hoped that construction can begin early next year.
The new state of the art school will be built on a green field site on the existing College grounds. It is hoped that construction will be completed in eighteen months to two years. The school will include two woodwork rooms, metal work room, design and communications room, three science laboratories, art and music rooms, a large sports hall and gymnasium as well as numerous other specialist rooms and classrooms. The new building  will greatly facilitate using  the latest information technology in teaching.

New School for St Pat's, Cavan.
The College will be able to continue in its present accommodation while construction is taking place. When the new building is complete the present A and B wings will be demolished to make way for a hard surface playing area. The distinctive front Hague building that has been beautifully restored in recent years and  serves as the diocesan Pastoral Centre will remain as it is.
The College principal, Dr. Liam Mc Niffe expressed absolute delight at the recent announcement. He was pleased not only that the College will get its new educational facilities, but that a much needed boost to the local economy with jobs, and its knock on effect in increased economic activity, will follow.
The College has been preparing for its eventual move to the new school for the last few years. Major fundraising by the Parents Association has helped purchase equipment for the new gym. In the interim the gym is operating in temporary accommodation in the school. Furthermore temporary accommodation in the old boarding school area has been used to set up a new library,  that can be transferred to the new state of the art library proposed in the new school.
In addition over two thirds of the old College has access to broadband and twelve of the thirty six classrooms are equipped with the teachers having their own laptop and a digital projector installed in each of these rooms. All this will mean that the College will hit the ground running when we hopefully arrive in our new surroundings.

The Principal thanked Minister Brendan Smith for his support and effort on behalf of the College and also
Rev. Dan Sheridan for his great work as Chairperson of the College’s Board of Management.
Cadette Vollyball Team
Their victory at the Regional final secured the team a place in the All-Ireland quarter final against local rivals Breffne College. Drumshambo "A" team were firm favourites here but the depth of the St pat's squad and their experience from the Spikeball All-Ireland finals last year ensured the lads dug deep and with some fine vollyball techniques and plays beat Drumshambo 25-16 and 25-13.

Night - Philip Smith.

As the sun sets,
The darkness approaches.
The moon savours,
The time when the sun wavers.
The earth is covered in a blanket of black,
A small mouse scurries through a farmer's shack.
In this time nothing stirs,
A cat looks at the stars and quietly purrs
And waits for the night to end.
The sun rises to send,
Its rays of light onto the sand,
And the darkness retreats from the land.

"The College Boys".
The launch of "The College Boys" written by Mr Raymond Dunne and the late Bishop Francis J. MacKiernan took place on 12th June in the College. The book was officially launched by Sean Cardinal Brady.
This book lists the names and original home addresses of the thousands of students who attended the Kilmore Academy
(1839-73) and St Patrick's College, Cavan (1874-2000). It is an important record of the students who attended both these colleges and is complimented by an informative introductory text and photographs from the early days of the College to the present day.
The idea of compiling a short history with a list of names, dates and addresses of every student who passed through the doors of the colleges came about after a conversation between Bishop Francis MacKiernan and Raymond Dunne six years ago.

Dr Liam McNiffe welcomed everyone to the College and paid tribute to Ray Dunne and the late Bishop Francis for their commitment and hard work on the book. The book is an invaluable resource not only to historians, but also to the thousands of past and present students and staff.

Bishop Leo O'Reilly welcomed everyone to the College and congratulated and thanked Ray Dunne and the late Bishop Francis MacKiernan who died unexpectantly on December 23, 2005, for what had become a labour of love for both men.

Cardinal Sean Brady congratulated his good friend Raymond Dunne,on completing the book which he and the late Bishop MacKiernan had began six years earlier. He said he was sorry that the late Bishop Frank hadn't lived to see the publication of the book, but he felt that he was certainly present in spirit.

Fr Liam Kelly' representing Cumann Senchais Bhreifne congratulated Ray and Bishop Francis and said the Society was delighted to be the publishers of The College Boys.

Copies are available from the School Office. Contact Geraldine at (049-4361888) Price €35.00 (excl. P&P)
