New school gets green light.

New school for St Patrick's College, Cavan.

St. Patrick’s College: Building on Tradition

The Tanaiste and Minister of Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, has authorised the Board of Management of St. Patrick’s College to commence construction of the new school. Building will begin in the next few weeks and is expected to take eighteen months to two years to complete.
As well as having  general classrooms the new state of the art school, catering for 625 students, will include the following specialist rooms:  Science labs (3),  metal work , woodwork (2) , design and communication graphics,  art, religion, computer, guidance, learning support, music, as well as a very large sports hall, including gym, library and large canteen.
The school will remain under the patronage of the Bishop  Leo O’ Reilly and the Trustees of the Kilmore Diocese. It will be built on what was called the Intermediate pitch, facing the main pitch, on the existing school grounds.

The beautiful neo- Gothic facade, originally built in the early 1870s, and traditionally associated with the College, will remain intact. This was mainly used by boarders until 2000, when boarding ceased. It was totally unsuited to the needs of a modern school. The Diocese of Kilmore undertook a major renovation and restoration  project and converted the building into a beautiful Pastoral Centre. For the last six or seven years the College has only used a few rooms, for administration purposes, in this building. The ‘new wing’ consisting of five storeys was built during the war years in the early 1940s. Five classrooms and an assembly hall were added in the late sixties and early seventies. St. Augustine’s wing was added in 1984. When the new school is completed, the ‘new wing’ of five storeys, as well as Killian’s five classrooms will be demolished. St. Augustine’s , which will be  in close proximity to the new school, will remain  intact and will be of great benefit with its existing three science labs, and other facilities.
The tendering process was carried out under the Department of Education and Skills strict guidelines, which stipulate that the project be awarded to the company that submits the lowest viable tender. Glenman Corporation, from Glenamaddy in Co. Galway secured the contract to build the new school.

Commenting on the final go-ahead from the Department, the school Principal, Dr. Liam Mc Niffe, expressed absolute delight at the news. He stated that a number of people had been working for a long time to reach this position. He thanked Bishop Leo O’ Reilly for his continuing support for this project, as well as  Minister Brendan Smith who has been a keen advocate of the new school.  The present Board of Management, under Fr. Dan Sheridan has been actively involved in furthering the project. Dr. Mc Niffe  also expressed gratitude to  previous Presidents/Principals of the College, Rev. John Mc Tiernan, Rev. Gerard Alwill, and Mr. Patsy Lee who all played a vital role in getting us to this stage today. He also praised the Parents’ Association, whose fundraising for ICT, gym and library resources means that the school will hopefully hit the ground sprinting in two years time.
Dr Mc Niffe concluded that amid the national gloom and fear, the prospect of such fine educational facilities was particularly welcome. It is hoped that the eight million euro project will employ between seventy and one hundred workers at the height of its construction.

Cavan Enterprise Innovation Award 2010

On Wednesday 3rd March, the Transition Year students of St. Patrick’s College took part in the Student Enterprise Awards in The Slieve Russell Hotel in Ballyconnell.
Hundreds of young budding entrepreneurs attended this annual event.

St Patrick’s college entered a number of Transition Year projects and they were successful with their company called Identapats. This company provided a student discount card.  The card allows students to avail of a 10% discount in local participating stores.  This creative idea was seen as a pioneering project that spotted a gap in the market.
The Group who are seen pictured above with their teacher Mr Ray Hogan are Cian Donohoe, Philip Smith, Liam Sharkey, Sean Van Haster, Andrew O'Brien and Pauric Donnelly were awarded the Cavan Enterprise Innovation award for 2010 for their exploits in the field of Innovation.

(Report by Philip Smith)

St Pat’s Transition Year Students enter  BT Young  Scientist
St Patrick’s College transition year students added yet another highlight to their calendar when two project groups qualified for the Young Scientist 2010.

One project group made up of Stephen Murray, Alan Kelly and Padraig Sexton, arrived at a prototype of a portable oxygen inhaler that assists people escaping from a smoke filled room or building during a fire.
This group discovered through much research that  75% of deaths in a fire occur from smoke inhalation rather than burns which meant there was a potential market for their device. They got the inspiration for the oxygen inhaler from Stephen’s late grandfather Brian Coleman. He was in Bundoran in 1979 when the Central Hotel went on fire, killing 10 people in total from smoke inhalation. He always wanted to come up with a device to try and prevent people dying under such tragic circumstances. He never completed his work and so the lads tried to take the project one step closer to completion.

The second project completed by Pauric Donnelly, Sean Van Haaster and Donal Cooney, involved the investigation on the effects of external sound on a person’s concentration. This study had only previously been carried out on rats, but dealing with human concentration levels gave it an extra edge. The inspiration for the study came from a school trip to Athlone. While at a talk in Athlone, almost everyone in the class was finding it hard to concentrate because of a high-pitched sound coming from one of the walls. It was later discovered that this was an anti-vermin device which emits a very high pitched sound that humans are not supposed to be able to hear, but which many young people can.
.
The St Pat’s students were interviewed on the six one news on RTÉ and BBC Radio Ulster, as well as Northern sound. Also the St Pat’s ‘young scientists’  were delighted to be supported by their fellow TY classmates on the Friday who travelled from Cavan to see them.

On the Friday evening the awards ceremony took place – a most enjoyable experience for all. Congratulations to Pauric Donnelly, Sean Van Haaster and Donal Cooney who were credited with a high commendation award/rosette for their project.

Overall it was a most challenging, interesting and beneficial venture for all six students and has brought another strand of success to Transition Year programme in St Patrick’s College.

St Patrick's College Students and Staff raise €1644 for Haiti Earthquake disaster.

Transition Year students along with Ms Annmarie Madden and Fr Kevin Fay decided to organise a fund raising soccer match between teachers and students. The student body were asked to donate €2 towards the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Appeal and come along to see their teachers and fellow students battle it out on the soccer pitch. Two mixed teacher teams first took to the arena to play for the prestigious honour of taking on the student team. After what only can be described as an action packed game between Ms Mc Caffrey's and Ms Carolin's teams, the latter won out.
Then it was the turn of the students to show their skills against a mixed teacher team.
Again this proved to be a very tight game with some excellent scoring from both sides. Towards the end, the game took an unexpected twist when the referee Mr Brennan decided to take control by becoming a sixth player for the teachers. His skill on the soccer pitch is legendary and with some very fancy footwork and a very dubious penalty the teachers scored the winning goal.....just as the final whistle was blown!
Final score is still in dispute and may never be resolved....A re-play sometime later in the term maybe?
