Music in the College

St Patrick's College has a musical tradition which goes back over 60 years. The first concert was produced in 1937 and in subsequent years the students presented many of the better know Gilbert & Sullivan operettas.

Since the 1970's the productions were of a more modern kind, featuring musicals such as "Oklahoma", "Calamity Jane",  "Jesus Christ Superstar", Bugsy Malone etc.   The most recent production was "Oliver", staged in 1999.

Under the guidance of the new music teacher, Ciaran Tackney, the college has recently expanded its music department and has established a College Choir and a College Orchestra.

The choir and orchestra have become the basis of the regular Choral-Orchestral Concerts held in the College Chapel.

In April 1998 the College Choir and Orchestra launched a CD.   The CD was recorded in the College Chapel and the proceeds are in aid of the Music Department

Tuition by specialist tutors in brass, woodwind and string instruments is available in the school.

A number of part-instrumental scholarships will be available to students
in order to help them study orchestral instruments.

The E.U. Multi-lateral School Partnerships Pilot Project

This project was first suggested in 1989 by the then President of the European Commission, Mr. Jacques Delors. The Council of Ministers of Education then decided to set up a pilot project involving 40 different second-level schools throughout the community.

St Patrick's College was one of three Irish schools selected.

Arising out of its involvement in this project, the aim of which was to study the influence of the wider Europe on our region, the college organised a special European Day in the school in April 1994. As well as representatives of the schools involved in the project, the guests included E.U. ambassadors, local representatives and parents of the students involved in the project. The guest of honour for the day was President Mary Robinson. She visited the special exhibition in the college library and then she addressed all the guests in the College Auditorium.
